Convenience and efficiency make gas fireplaces the number one choice for most homeowners. The newest models have all the realism of a roaring wood fire, but none of the struggle or mess associated with burning wood.
Unvented or vent-free gas fireplaces are a common here in the Carolinas because they are easy to install and adequate for supplemental heating during our mild winters. There are some sizing considerations and indoor air quality concerns, but flexible installation makes it possible to put a vent-free fireplace practically anywhere*.
Direct vent gas fireplaces are the best choice when a fireplace is to be used primarily for heat. The idea is simple: all combustion products are exhausted to outside using a coaxial or collinear vent, which also provides all of the combustion air. The result is a very efficient gas fireplace that provides the same sort of comforting radiant heat that we get from a wood fire. The technology also allows for very good realism and installation flexibility. Most models can vent horizontally through a wall or vertically through a roof. There are no negative effects associated with using the fireplaces for longs hours (24 hours a day, if you like!) and efficiencies are very high.
Natural vent technology is the oldest technology and least efficient, but many times is the best product for the application if realism is a priority and heat is not a concern. Natural vent (sometimes called gravity-vent or b-vent) fireplaces rely on convection (hot air rising) to vent properly and require vertical venting and will draw most of the combustion air from the home. It is possible to use these principles using a combination of wood-burning fireplaces with gas logs which can be the most dramatic and realistic gas fireplaces.
Most gas fireplaces can be operated from a wall switch or remote control. Some remote controls can also raise and lower the flame height, change fan speeds or regulate the temperature by thermostat. * the North Carolina Building code does not permit unvented products in bedrooms and limits bathroom installations to 6,000 BTUs. South Carolina permits up to 10,000 BTUs in a bedroom. Other areas vary.
